The following statistics reveal the efforts of Denver metro area law enforcement agencies in their
DUI patrols during the Halloween period of 2007. In short, don't drink and drive...especially around
holiday periods. There are increased patrols not just on Halloween night but the days surrounding
it.
In order for police to initiate a traffic stop, they must have 'reasonable suspicion' that you
have committed, are committing, or are about to commit a crime. In most cases, this
involves some form of a traffic offense. So how do you avoid this contact? Very simple...
do not commit a traffic offense.
Some traffic offenses are ones that you commit by an action that you do on the road. All of
the following are offenses that my clients have allegedly committed leading to a traffic stop.
- Speeding
- Failing to drive in a single lane (Weaving)
- Failing to signal a turn
- Following too closely to the vehicle in front of them
- Failing to come to a complete stop at a stop sign or stop light
- Failing to utilize headlights when conditions require
- Failing to obey traffic signals
- Driving 10mph less than the posted speed limit (unless traffic or weather conditions
suggest otherwise)
